Third Coast Percussion
and Zakir Hussain
$15-20 student tickets available
We were sad to learn that tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away in San Francisco on December 15 at age 73. We will be announcing new information about this concert in early 2025.
For nearly 20 years, Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion has forged a unique path in the musical landscape with virtuosic, energetic performances that celebrate the extraordinary depth and breadth of musical possibilities in the world of percussion. The dazzling ensemble has been praised for “commandingly elegant” (The New York Times) performances, the “rare power” (The Washington Post) of their recordings, and “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity.” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)
The four members of Third Coast have commissioned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain to compose a major work that blends the timbres of tabla with a classically trained percussion ensemble. A shared spirit of collaboration and curiosity reverberates among the five artists, who will share the stage for the first time as part of a collaborative concert presentation.

Founded in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has performed hundreds of concerts across the country, presents an annual concert season at home in Chicago, teaches musicians of all ages and experience levels, and has commissioned dozens of new works by composers including Glenn Kotche, Philip Glass, Devonté Hynes, Chris Cerrone, Augusta Read Thomas, Donnacha Dennehy, and David T. Little.
The pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon and one of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians. The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, Zakir was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve, accompanying India’s greatest classical musicians and dancers and touring internationally with great success by the age of eighteen. His brilliant accompaniment, solo performance and genre-defying collaborations, including his pioneering work to develop a dialogue between North and South Indian musicians, have elevated the status of his instrument both in India and globally, bringing the tabla into a new dimension of renown and appreciation.
