Sermon

Streaming through Sun Mar 20

The Philadelphia Orchestra
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, music director
Davóne Tines, bass-baritone

Packaged as a sort of mini song cycle, Tines performs “You Want the Truth, but You Don’t Want to Know” from Anthony Davis’s opera X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X (a role he will perform with Detroit Opera in May 2022), as well as “Vigil,” which is both a work of art and a call to action co-written with Igee Dieudonné and dedicated to the memory of Breonna Taylor. John Adams’s “Shake the Heavens” from his Nativity oratorio El Niño pulses with urgent and frightening tremolos reminiscent of Handel’s Messiah that live up to the title and speak to our times. “As Schubert used the reflection of one’s self in a brook to examine the big questions of existence and reality, so does Tines in this assemblage of works that, collectively, hold up a mirror to where America is on race.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)
