UMS 101:
What is Music Therapy?
We all know a great song can change our mood, bring back a vivid memory, or help us get through a tough day. But how exactly does music heal us? And how do professionals harness that power to improve lives?
Join us for What Is Music Therapy? An enlightening 90-minute UMS 101 workshop that explores the intersection of art, neuroscience, and human connection. Led by board-certified music therapists and educators, this session offers a fascinating look at how rhythm, melody, and harmony are used as clinical tools to support physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being.
This evening is built to be approachable, community-focused, and highly interactive. You will experience the science of sound, a brief, accessible introduction to how music interacts with the brain and body to reduce stress and assist healing, as well as behind the scenes to discover what a real music therapy session looks like across different settings, from hospitals to schools.
Lastly, an experiential activity to try it out firsthand! You’ll get to participate in gentle, fun, and casual music-making exercises designed to demonstrate the therapeutic process in real-time. Come discover the profound impact music has on our health, and leave with practical insights into how you can mindfully use music in your own everyday life.
