UMS 101: SW!NG OUT

Public Workshop
 

Choreographer and artist Caleb Teicher explores the Lindy Hop in their dynamic new show, SW!NG OUT. Learn about Lindy Hop, a Black social dance that grew out of jazz, tap, and Charleston to become the hottest dance of the Swing Era. This workshop will get you up on your feet and moving to the sounds of big band music.

Join us March 31 for this 90-minute UMS 101 workshop that correlates with the April 1, 2022 performance of SW!NG OUT. Deepen your experience and understanding in advance of the performance in a fun, casual learning environment, facilitated by Paulette Brockington.

$49 registration includes the 90-minute workshop & light snacks, plus a ticket to the April 1, 2022 performance of SW!NG OUT. (Please note, performance is on a different day/time/location than the workshop. Sorry, no ticket exchanges or refunds for previously purchased tickets.)

Facilitator Biography

Paulette Brockington is a versatile dance artist who has professional experience in a number of concert and social dance styles. She is an award-winning choreographer, a lauded teacher, and champion dancer known for her musicality and inventiveness on the dance floor. Brockington has worked with dance, theater, and opera companies. A former Arts Educator of the Year and Michigan Heritage Award Fellow, she is an active artist-in-residence and workshop teacher. Her work has led her to Japan, the UK, Sweden, Germany, Norway & Canada. Brockington is a Fulbright Specialist in Dance for World Learning/US State Department whose term ends January 2025.

How do I register?

How much does it cost to register?
$15 for the class + ticket for the performance. Registration for UMS 101 includes a ticket to the performance, workshop fees, and light snacks before the performance.

If I already have a ticket for the performance, can I register only for the class?
Yes. There is an option on Rec & Ed’s registration page to register only for the UMS 101 class ($15).

Where do the workshops take place?
Workshops will either take place at the performance venue or at a location within walking distance of the venue. Registered participants will receive an email from Rec & Ed confirming the location of the workshop 24 hours prior to the event.

Where do I pick-up my tickets?
Registered participants can pick up their tickets at the registration table.

Can I register on-site?
Advanced registration on the Rec & Ed website is strongly encouraged. Walk-up registration is available beginning 30 minutes before each scheduled workshop and is open until spots are filled. On-site registrants will be asked to complete a registration form with their credit card information. Cash and check payments are also accepted.
