Canceled: Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan

Events

Cloud Gate Dance Theater returns to Ann Arbor with two pieces representing the past and future of the company.

Nearly 50 years ago, choreographer Lin Hwai-min founded the company, the first contemporary dance ensemble in the greater Chinese-speaking community. Lin has recently retired as artistic director of the company, and his work Dust is a lament on the fragility of humans in the face of cruelty and a requiem for those affected by the political suppressions, massacres, and genocides of the 21st century, set to Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8. New artistic director Cheng Tsung-lung, who previously led Cloud Gate 2, presents 13 Tongues. Named after a legendary street artist and storyteller from the 1960s, 13 Tongues transforms Cheng’s childhood memories of Taoist rites and the bustling street life of Bangka, the oldest district in Taipei, into a dreamlike fantasy world.
