Named after the Greek goddess of hunt and wilderness, the Artemis Quartet was founded in 1989 but took a full 10 years before it performed its first concerts for a live audience.

The U-M Center for World Performance Studies hosts saxophonist Colin Stetson for an interview about his artistic craft and process, and the creation of his latest work Sorrow.

Iconic South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim and his band Ekaya — with Freddie Hendrix in the trumpet chair — present a concert program in tribute to The Jazz Epistles, South Africa’s first black jazz band, first recorded jazz group, and important contributors to modern jazz.

Henryk Górecki’s iconic third symphony, often called “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs,” made a huge impact on listeners in the early 1990s and was a musical touchstone for virtuoso saxophonist and Ann Arbor native Colin Stetson.

This class will introduce participants to the one of the earliest examples of opera that still has a place in the present repertoire 400 years later: Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo.
