You Can Dance!
Detroit Jit with Haleem “Stringz” Rasul
Calling All Curious Movers…You Can Dance! returns for another season of movement and community at Riverside Arts Center.
Facilitated by artists from across the Midwest, these 60-minute workshops are ideal for movers seeking to deepen their awareness of movement and music through fun and engaging experiences. Recommended for participants ages 12 and up; little to no dance experience is required.
In this class, participants will learn about a Detroit dance form known as Jit. We’ll begin with a follow-the-leader warm-up utilizing foundational movements, learn a few small combinations, and piece together a short routine.
Haleem “Stringz” Rasul began his dance career in the mid 1990s with a concentration on breakin’, hip hop’s original dance form. After exploring dance in other communities across the U.S., Stringz gained more appreciation for Detroit’s own dance innovation, the Jit. As a dance, the Jit combines high-energy footwork and arm syncopations that can be done both standing and on the floor, creating a dynamic aesthetic all under a unique groove. According to Stringz, “This is Detroit’s hip hop dance.”
