Please note: This performance will begin at 8 pm as planned. (This morning’s school day performance was canceled due to the closure of Ann Arbor Public Schools.)

Urban Bush Women’s uniquely bold and boundary-pushing nonlinear storytelling weaves contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of African Americans and the African Diaspora.

Crafted from personal narratives and community interviews, Hair & Other Stories brings life to everyday stories shared in our kitchens and living rooms, and through social media and YouTube.

Struggles around the complexities of our current world and the times ahead are illustrated through dynamic storytelling and movement, with a luscious musical score that includes original compositions by The Illustrious Blacks. The company’s investigation of “Superheroes” transforms notions of hair as well as perceptions of body image, race, gender identity, economic inequities, and what constitutes freedom, liberation, and release in our everyday struggles to rise to our extra-ordinary selves in extraordinary times.

Hair & Other Stories invites diverse audiences of all backgrounds to experience — and celebrate — these relatable stories that open doors to new conversations in unknown territories.

Please note: Production includes strobe effects and haze.

Artist Q&A. Friday, January 12, post-performance.
