Third Coast Percussion
$15-20 student tickets available
For nearly 20 years, Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion has forged a unique path in the musical landscape with virtuosic, energetic performances that celebrate the extraordinary depth and breadth of musical possibilities in the world of percussion. The dazzling ensemble has been praised for “commandingly elegant” (The New York Times) performances, the “rare power” (The Washington Post) of their recordings, and “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity.” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)
The four members of Third Coast commissioned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain to compose a major work that blends the timbres of tabla with a classically trained percussion ensemble, and the five artists were scheduled to share the stage together. Tragically, Hussain passed away in San Francisco on December 15, 2024, at age 73. His completed commission will remain on the program, and UMS will announce a new tabla artist soon to perform in his honor.
