Performance
Sensory Friendly
Ypsi Freighthouse

The Telegraph Quartet, University of Michigan’s Ensemble-in-Residence (featuring 2 violins, 1 viola, and 1 cello), presents an inviting performance of works by Shostakovich, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn. This concert is open to all and specifically designed to welcome those who benefit from a more flexible environment—including individuals on the autism spectrum, people with sensory or communication preferences, and their friends and families.

On the Program

Shostakovich Two Pieces for String Quartet (Polka)
Beethoven String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135
Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13

What to Expect

This relaxed, sensory-friendly performance is designed to offer a welcoming environment where audience members can experience the music in the way that feels most comfortable to them. The performance has no sudden or unexpected changes in sound or lighting. The lights will shift gradually between colors over an extended period.

Audience members are welcome to move, make quiet sounds, or step out as needed, and a quiet space will be available for anyone who would like to take a break.

Timing and availability of the space
The doors of the Freighthouse open at 5:30 pm. You can enter the space starting at 5:30 pm or arrive later if you prefer. The performance begins at 6 pm and lasts about 60 minutes. You can leave before the performance is over if you want or need to.
Seating and accessibility
There will be white folding chairs with light padding available for seating. There is no assigned seating, so you may choose any available seat. If you prefer not to sit in a chair, you may stand on the sides of the room or in the back of the room. We are able to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility aids.
Freedom of Movement
Please make yourself comfortable. Feel free to move around, stretch, or stand near the sides or back of the venue at any time. If you begin in a seat, you can get up and move to another place during the performance.
Sound
Artists will use a microphone with light amplification to introduce themselves and share brief insights about the music before and in between pieces. During the performance, microphones are set aside for a natural acoustic sound.
Lighting
There are no sudden changes in sound or light during the performance. There will be slow shifts of the color of the lights over an extended period of time.
Sensory Tools Available
We encourage you to bring your own noise-canceling headphones or earplugs so you can adjust to the sound as needed. We have some headphones and earplugs on-site for people to use in the space. You are welcome to bring fidget toys or anything you might need to feel comfortable in the space.
Designated Quiet Space
A designated quiet room is open throughout the event if you or a family member need to step away for a break.
Restrooms
There is a designated women’s room and a designated men’s room located toward the back of the building. There are individual stalls in each bathroom, including an ADA-compliant accessible stall.
Staff Support
Need assistance, directions, or sensory equipment? Look for UMS staff members wearing black UMS/Freighthouse T-shirts—we are here to help!
