The Rhythm is in Your Hands
Let’s Learn about the Darbuka
The darbuka, also known as the Egyptian Tabla, is a small drum that has been around for thousands of years. Historians believe this drum dates back to Ancient Babylonia and the name comes from the Arabic word “darba,” meaning to strike. When it was first created, the darbuka was made of clay and animal skin. Now, with modern technology, most darbukas are made of aluminum, with synthetic heads. Though it has a long history of being used in traditional music, the darbuka has influenced popular music as well. Join musician, producer, and UMS artist facilitator Roger Kashou to explore the rhythm, history, and techniques of the darbuka.
