Let’s Learn about Character Clowning

Clowning has a long and storied history, dating back to the “fools” of Greek and Roman theater and the masked characters of commedia dell’arte. Over time, clowning has evolved in many directions, from the silent film antics of Charlie Chaplin, to the physical theatre performances of Jaques Lecoq, to outrageous television character actors like Carol Burnett. Though often associated with comedy, clowning is a deeply expressive art that can convey joy, sorrow, and anything in between. Utilizing movement, exaggerated facial expressions, and audience interaction, clowns create performances that transcend language and age. Join professional clown and UMS artist facilitator Rose Carver to discover the heart, technique, and history of character clowning.
