What is UMS 101? (And Why You Should Sign Up!)

Deepen your experience and understanding in a fun, casual learning environment.

Developed and presented in partnership with Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation, UMS 101 is a 90-minute pre-performance workshop tailored for audience members who want to familiarize themselves with or deepen their understanding of a particular genre and performing artist.

Each UMS 101 workshop is facilitated by a professional, community-based practicing artist/educator and features conversation, engaging activities, and live demonstrations that enhance each participant’s experience attending the full performance.

Please Note: UMS requires all attendees to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test for the workshop and the performance (please bring a hard copy or have viewable on your phone). Masks are required indoors.

Imani Winds and Catalyst Quartet are two groundbreaking chamber music ensembles leading the way in commissioning, performing, and recording music by BIPOC composers while re-imagining and re-defining the classical music experience. Learn about these extraordinary musicians and a new work that UMS commissioned for the woodwind quintet and string quartet to perform together by groundbreaking composer (and former Catalyst quartet violinist) Jessie Montgomery.

Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández
UMS 101: Ballet Folklórico

Ballet Folklórico de México founder Amalia Hernández was a trained ballet and modern dancer. Drawn to the traditions of more than 60 regions in Mexico, Amalia choreographed dance performances that celebrate the country’s indigenous legends and traditions dating back to the pre-Columbian era. Amalia’s anthropological approach to dance performance is a veritable living cultural history of Mexico. Explore some of the signature movements and roots of this colorful and dynamic artform.

UMS 101: SW!NG OUT

Choreographer and artist Caleb Teicher explores the Lindy Hop in their dynamic new show, SW!NG OUT. Learn about Lindy Hop, a Black social dance that grew out of jazz, tap, and Charleston to become the hottest dance of the Swing Era. This workshop will get you up on your feet and moving to the sounds of big band music.
