UMS Advisory Committee

The UMS Advisory Committee is an organization of 70 volunteers who contribute approximately 7,000 hours of service to UMS each year. The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to raise community awareness and funds for UMS? nationally acclaimed arts education program. Members contribute their time and talents in a wide variety of ways consistent with their interests.

Fundraising projects include the Ford Honors Program Gala, On the Road, and Delicious Experiences. Advisory Ambassadors and Youth Performance Ushering are two projects that involve direct contact with local school children, teachers and community groups.

All Advisory Committee members serve as UMS advocates to the greater community by encouraging attendance at UMS performances and participation in UMS and Advisory Committee programs and events.

    Two upcoming events include:
  • Ford Honors Program and Dinner Gala
    January 24, 2009
This year?s program will honor the Royal Shakespeare Company, its Artistic Director Michael Boyd, and U-M Professor Ralph Williams with the UMS Distinguished Artist awards. Following the program and award presentation, the UMS Advisory Committee will host a Gala reception and dinner to benefit UMS Education Programs.
  • On The Road For the last three years in September, approximately 300 people enjoyed an evening of food, music, and silent and live auctions, netting more than $70,000 to support UMS Education Programs. On the Road 2009 will be on September 12, 2009 at the Barton Hills Country Club.

Please call 734.764.8489 for more information on either of these events.

    Specific Advisory Committee responsibilities are:
  • Attend Advisory Committee meetings every other month. General membership meetings are bi-monthly beginning in September, usually at the noon hour.
  • Serve as chair, co-chair or active participant for one or more committees or events.
  • Attend as many Advisory Committee and UMS events as possible.
  • Be an ambassador for UMS by promoting events, performances and donor opportunities.
  • Contribute $100 or more annually to UMS.

The above list is not meant to be exclusive since we are also committed to the idea that jobs evolve with the imagination and commitment of the people serving in them.

Members serve a three year term, which may be extended for an additional three years by invitation of the Chair of the Advisory Committee. Membership recruitment begins in January, and new members join in June at the beginning of the 2009-2010 administrative year. For more information, please contact Membership Chair Charlene Hancock at waltonhancock@comcast.net or 734-665-5631. Thank you for your interest in the Advisory Committee.

Publicity Operations/Signage Team (POST)

UMS?s newest community volunteer program is "Publicity Operations/Signage Team" or POST. If you love seeing live performing arts events and have a few extra hours to spare to help UMS post flyers in the downtown Ann Arbor area, this program is perfect for you!

    Here's how it works:
  1. Sign up for the e-mail list to receive information about upcoming POST events.
  2. Volunteer to POST for an event and take posters to local businesses, filling out a checklist that will be provided.
  3. Return your checklist to UMS by the designated date and receive two complimentary tickets.
  4. Enjoy the performance!

If you'd like to be a POST-er and earn a pair of free tickets to select performances on the 08/09 season, please send an e-mail to umspost@umich.edu or call Sara Billmann at 734-763-0611.
